Text Box: Team RRR Ladies win the 40+ Division !

Second NYRR team points race of 2007 brings out top talent

Brooklyn, April 14, 2007—The race for the top spot in the NYRR
Points competition hit the road this weekend at the
NYRR Half-Marathon Grand Prix: Brooklyn.

While many New York-area distance runners headed north and east
for what is predicted to be a cold, windy, rain-drenched Boston
Marathon on Monday, 22 RRR members took advantage of sunshine
and seasonable temps to compete at the 2nd team race of 2007.

Team RRR knew it had potential and we proved it, as the RRR ladies
in the 40+ division ran away with the top spot! Carol Guzinski was
the winner of the 40—44 age group with teammate Laura DiMarino
right behind in second place, a 1-2 punch. With a 2nd place in the
50-55 division for Josepine Patten the combined time of 4:38:23
was good enough to edge Taconic by a mere 18 seconds.
Out of 28 teams in the series, The RRR Ladies 40+ team moves into
2nd place in the overall club points standings. It should be noted that
this is Carol’s second win in the series and she is currently in the top
10 overall in the Individual Overall Grand Prix standings.

Steven Joseph, Anthony Ferraro, Edward Brown and Ricardo
Hernandez all took 3-4 minutes off their personal bests. Gary Lausin
Impressed everyone with his 1:41:35 half marathon debut.
We thank everyone for their commitment to team RRR we are having
a great time and doing quite well. GO RRR!

Hello.  My name is Sam Berman (son of member Tony Berman) and this summer I am going on a trip to Montana with my Youth Group from Grace Episcopal Church in Nyack.  In Montana, we will be staying on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation and we will be helping these people in their daily needs, such as painting, cleaning, child care, etc.  I ask your help in sponsoring the twelve student attendees.  If we are able to go, we would be helping hundreds and thousands of people who live on this reservation.  It would be greatly appreciated if you would consider this.  Checks should be made out to Grace Episcopal Church and sent to Sam Berman, 217 Foss Drive, Upper Nyack, NY 10960.  Thank you for taking the time to read this.

THE JOURNAL NEWS
(Original publication: April 11, 2007)
Kathy Alter will walk through the streets of Manhattan late at night this June with one thought in mind: her best friend's suicide last year. The Stony Point resident will be one of thousands to participate in "Out of the Darkness Overnight," a 20-mile fundraising walk meant to offer a healing ground and to educate people about suicide prevention. Alter said her best friend suffered from bipolar depression and that she hoped to reach out to people before it was too late, to let them know there is hope.
"People should not be embarrassed or feel that they'd be put away," she said. "Any situation or any circumstance that they're feeling at that time can change."
The walk is planned from sunset on June 9 through sunrise on June 10, said Robert Gebbia, Executive Director of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, a New York City-based nonprofit. "It's very powerful and very moving," Gebbia said. "The symbolism is, as the sun comes up, that hopefully we'll shed more light on suicide and what we can do to prevent it. "This is the first time the walk will be held in New York City, he said. Other walks have been held in Washington, D.C., San Francisco and Chicago. This year, funds raised through the walk would be donated for research and local suicide-prevention programs, Gebbia said. Some of the money would also go toward developing a film that would teach high school students about depression and understanding that there is help. But mostly, Gebbia said, the walk's goal is to let people know it's OK to talk about suicide.
"Historically, families just went inward, didn't talk about it, and suffered in silence," he said. "They often feel it's their fault. They feel this terrible guilt and shame." But suicide is the fault of the illness, not of any one person, Gebbia said. In fact, the organization aims to change the language used when talking about suicide because of the negative connotations it promotes, he said.
People do not commit suicide like they commit a crime, Gebbia said. Rather, they die by suicide. "Just like something goes wrong with the heart or the lungs, things can go wrong with the brain," he said. Gebbia said 90 percent of suicides are caused by treatable psychiatric illnesses such as depression or bipolar depression. He said suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the country with more than 30,000 people in the United States dying each year.
Adam Feldman, 38, said his father died by suicide in 1998 and his uncle also died last year. "It was tough for my entire family," the Nanuet resident said. "We never quite understood why or how things could get so bad." At first, he said the family didn't know how to address the issue. "You mention suicide and you're embarrassed," he said. "At first, we said he died of a heart attack or natural causes. But it's not an embarrassment. It is a serious problem."
