Text Box: Team RRR at the Circle of Friends Mini 10K

The RRR Ladies participated in the oldest women’s road race the “Circle of Friends Mini 10K” on Saturday and ran with some of the best women runners in the world. I was particularly excited to have spent a few minutes chit chatting with Benita Johnson after the race. During my warm up I saw her and wished her good luck, she said “to you too.” I was thrilled. After I crossed the finish and caught my breath, I went to drop the chip in the bucket and there she was. We exchanged comments about the weather and such and I wished her luck in her upcoming races. She return the sentiment. She was the only elite that was visible amongst the crowd before and after the race. Warming up with the general masses before taking her position among the best in the world. Twenty nine world class athletes competed in this race. Lorna Kipligat, the winner for the last three years, commented at the awards ceremony that this race was important because it was the first race that allowed women to participate in road races. I guess it would be important to the woman who makes a living running fast. She also commented about the heat and mile four being tough, nice to hear that the pro’s feel it as well.
Three trophies for RRR ladies, Laura DiMarino (1st, 40-44, 2nd masters finisher($100), Marie Killeen (3rd, 70+) and Josephine Patten (3rd, 50-54).
Text Box: RRR spends the weekend at the Relay for Life.

If you have never participated at this event you are missing out! It is remarkable that a track and the fields around it can be transformed into a village of support and hope. There was inspiration all around and the Rockland Road Runner members that walked/jogged the track or just visited the RRR base camp united to support the cause and each other. The event started at noon in the heat and humidity, and continued until the following morning at six. One particular RRR member was on the track the whole duration of the event 16 hours. Why you ask? In honor of his mother, who lost her battle with cancer. Bringing him a banana, water or running a lap or two with him, was what his friends and family did to support him during his quest. And his efforts were greeted and cheered as the clock ran out. Anthony Ferraro ran 61 miles, counting every lap with a counter.
John Melican came to the event even though he just recently underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor the size of a softball from his chest. I am happy to report that he is in good health and is recovering quite nicely. It is inspirational to see John strive to fight the disease that has plagued his family and himself. Our prayers are with him for a speedy recovery, keep fighting John!

A special note of thanks to Alison Luscher who single handedly ran a back sale to raise additional money at the event. She cleared over 100 dollars selling her delicious baked goods. Way to go!

The village of hope was disbanded and the participants all returned home but the money raised and the inspiration goes on.

William Carpenter prepared a wonderful video of the event, you can view it at this link.

Thanks to all the members that participated and donated to this great cause.
