Text Box: NYC Half Marathon—Results
The heat wave finally broke, and the cooler less humid weather was indeed a factor contributing the Team RRR’s success at the NYRR NYC Half Marathon. 9920 runners from around the world made it to the finish of the race that has been called the greatest half marathon in the world.

Text Box: Turkey Trot race committee signup!
We are looking for any club members who may be interested in serving on this year's Turkey Trot committee. The commitment entails a handful of meetings between Labor Day and Thanksgiving. It also involves some work assignments as we get closer to race day (especially race week). As the event continues to grow we need to adjust and grow with it. Adding new members to the committee is an important part of its' continued success. If you are interested in serving on this year's Turkey Trot race committee, please contact race director Mike Greco at Grecland@cs.com and let him know. As always, we thank those currently on the committee who continue to contribute toward the success of our Turkey Trot extravaganza. It is because of your committed efforts that our Turkey Trot has become the event it is.
117 days until the Turkey Trot!!!

3 Mile Fun Run and Summer Barbecue
There was some worry about the heat and thundershowers but a few members still showed and ran.
Over 100 members attended the Barbeque and about 20 diehards ran the 3 mile fun run.
Several kids ran the kids races. Fun was the theme and everyone was able to enjoy themselves before
the storm moved in. Thanks to Cheryl Langus for directing this event and to Ernest, Enilda, Marie,
Jim D, Mike N and all the other volunteers that made this event a success. Pictures are worth a
thousand words… and pictures taken by member Ed Howard can be viewed at:

NYRR Team Championship 5 miler and picnic in the Park!

We will be chartering a bus to the NYRR Team Championships in Central Park on Saturday, August 18th.  In addition to the bus, we will have a picnic bRUNch after the races before we return to Rockland.  This is a fun event because it is one of the few times where everyone can cheer their teammates on because the guys and gals run separately. Based on last year, it was a toss up on who yelled the loudest.  So don't miss out and come be a part of the fun and camaraderie!  Runners of all abilities are welcome.

It is a 5 mile race and the men's race starts at 8AM and the women's race starts at 9AM.  The bus will leave from the commuter lot (Lot J) of the Palisades Center Mall at 6AM.  The entrance to the lot is across from Home Depot.  The cost for the bus is $10.  Please make checks payable to RRR and send them to Team RRR, P.O. Box 132, Congers, NY  10920.  Also please email me if you'd like to reserve a seat on the bus.  If you plan on arranging your own  transportation to the race, but
will be joining us for the picnic, please let me know so we have enough food and beverages for everyone to enjoy. If you like baking feel free to bring something to share.
You must register for the race separately at www.nyrr.org.  The cost to register for the race is only $5.  Contact Cheryl Langus for additional information: activities@rocklandroadrunners.org

Volunteers and spectators are welcome at the picnic and on the bus.

5K and Picnic
The 2007 Masters Challenge by Scott Abercrombie

The 2007 Masters Challenge between Westchester, Wolfpit, Rockland, Sound Shore and Taconic was held
on August first in FDR Park. Water, snacks, soda, beer, food, and volunteers were provided by Taconic and
Wolfpit. Don’t know when it began. This has been a tradition that goes way back into the recesses of club
history, way before I became a master all those 17 years ago. I believe, although I’m not really sure since
I’m past the age of memory, that the first time I participated it was a five miler in FDR with few of the amenities
we have today. After the race someone had a keg of beer in the back of their pick-up truck, and that was about
the extent of it. The driving force behind the event was the competition between the clubs. Since then the
emphasis has shifted somewhat from the race to the time spent mingling after the race. The 5 miler has been
shortened to a 5K, and water, soda, snacks, salads and glorious wedges now augment the beer. Even the quality
of the beer has been elevated thanks to Gary Steinel and a local brewery in Pleasantville. The competition between
individuals remains very important; however, the team competition at the Challenge is probably not what it was. Clubs need to get to know each other, share ideas, and maybe even collaborate once in awhile. It’s really about our sport, and our biggest allies are our neighboring clubs; thus, two years ago Rockland Road Runners joined the mix, and this year Sound Shore made their debut. It was a great opportunity for the clubs to get together, make friendships, and build relationships. In simple Taconic terms, the 2007 Masters Challenge was a blast.
We picked an August date to prevent anyone from racing within a week of the Empire State Games, but it looks as though the Challenge ended up conflicting with a few vacation plans. Sorry. Let me also apologize for any errors in the results. I did the best I could interpreting the information on the bibs, and I really struggled with some of the names. Thanks to all the volunteers for making it possible for the rest of us to run. Next year the race will be hosted by Westchester at Rockefeller State Park.

Text Box: Members on the move….
Oh say can you see?
Perhaps you never noticed, but the flag located behind the boat house of the bait and tackle shop at Rockland Lake was looking a little worn. Actually it looked like it served in Iraq. Member Roxanna Radacovich sent an email to the Board asking if we knew who was responsible for the upkeep of the flag, and if there was something we could do about it. The very fleet footed Bernie Casserly jumped into action, found out that the flag poll was not under state control but was part of the Boathouses leased area. Rockland Lake never informed Chris the manager/owner of the bait shop that he was responsible for its upkeep. Because there is always such red tape and buck passing, and combined with the fact that Chris had jumped in and helped us out emensely during the Hook course relocation, it was decided that RRR would give the flag as a token of our appreciation and simplify the process while doing a good deed. It now waves proudly!

Text Box: Aqua Jogging….cross training!
It seems that many people run for the pool when they are injured, I personally love it for cross training. Where else can you develop your cardio without and ounce of impact. It provides a steady yet gentle resistance. Most people do not try to incorporate this cross training in their schedule for two reasons, no assess to a pool and they cannot swim! There is a company that has developed a portable belt and assessories to allow the second reason to be eliminated. I have been in contact with Aqua Jogger the leading manufacturer of deep water running belts and equipment and they have offered our members the chance to purchase this equipment at a wholesale price through our club. Shelly Shrem and I are looking into arrangements for time in a local pool to hold deep water running and exercise classes. If there is anyone interested in the sessions or purchasing the equipment please contact me. This is a workout where no one gets left behind and is recommended for the young and the old alike.
