Q&A with previous Turkey Trot director, Mike Greco
Reprinted from The Journal News

By Khurram Saeed • November 8, 2009

One of Rockland's most enduring Thanksgiving traditions is the annual Turkey Trot around Rockland Lake in Clarkstown.

Mike Greco was the race director for 13 years, through 2009.

But this year's turkey trot - the largest running event in the county - will be extra special for Greco, who will serve as race director for the final time.

What is the Turkey Trot?

The Rockland Road Runners Turkey Trot is an annual 5-mile run on the morning of Thanksgiving Day at Rockland Lake State Park in Congers. This year it's on Thursday, Nov. 26, at 8:30 a.m. A wheelchair division is also included. (It) starts at 8:15 a.m.

Whom does it help?

The race benefits local charitable organizations, including People to People of Rockland and the Rockland County Police Hispanic Society Scholarship Fund, just to name a few. Over the last 17 years, the Turkey Trot has donated several hundred thousand dollars to charitable organizations and causes throughout Rockland County. Last year alone, about $40,000 was raised and donated.

How has the event grown?

The running of the first Turkey Trot was in 1992 with 180 participants crossing the finish line. Since then, the number has increased each and every year. Last year, there were 1,998 registered participants, which I understand is the Rockland County record for a single road race. We are very proud of that and hope to break the 2,000 mark this year.

How is this Turkey Trot different from others held across the Lower Hudson Valley?

It is much more than a simple race or event. I think a better description would be as a "community extravaganza." I attribute this to a fabulous race committee that has taken great lengths to maintain a very patriotic and family atmosphere. Additionally, I have always looked at this event as a tremendous opportunity to give back to those in our community who may not be as fortunate.

How much does it cost?

(Note: see our race info page for current registration and fee info).

Where can people find out more information?

Visit the Turkey Trot Web site or email turkeytrotdirector@rocklandroadrunners.org

Anything you'd like to add?

All participants are requested to bring nonperishable food for our annual food drive.

All food will be given to People to People. Because of parking issues, it is highly recommended that you arrive no later than 7:30 a.m.
